Review of The Help by Kathryn Stockett

This book follows the lives of Aibileen, Minny and Skeeter. Two of these women are black maids in the 1960’s in the deep south of America. Skeeter is a budding writer and decides she wants to write a book about the lives of maids working for white families during the civil rights movement.

Aibileen is one of the main characters in this novel along with Minny. Minny comes across as a very strong character however we learn that Minny’s home life isn’t perfect. She is very close to Aibileen and these two characters work really well together and I believe this book wouldn’t work without one of them. Aibileen comes across as very wise and she cares deeply about the children she is entrusted to care for. She teaches the children, "You is Smart, You is Kind, You is Important” and at the end of the book this quote is important for Mae Mobley.

It might have took me ages to pick up this book and even longer to read it but it was well worth it. This book has made it into my favourites list which isn’t that long and it takes a lot to pick books to be in that list.  I love the way this book was written in the voices of the characters. I could imagine exactly how each of these characters sounded. There are moments in this book that touched me emotionally and made me smile.

5/5 stars
